It is based on Google Search, that shows how often a particular search term is entered relative to the total search volume across various regions of the world, and in various languages.

It charts frequencies of any set of comma-delimited search strings using a yearly count of n-grams found in sources printed between 1500 and 2008 in Google’s text corpora in English.
If you search for keyword MAHATMA GANDHI, it will show a trend of how many times the word is used in books in last 200 years. You can narrow down to a period and find specific books. Clearly, 1960 was the year with a peak for books mentioning him and since then it has shown a downward trend.
